Your IRATA logbook

Yours for life — not your employer's. Built to satisfy IRATA ICOP. Better than paper in every way.

It belongs to you

Your paper IRATA logbook is yours — but it's easy to lose, damage, or leave at camp. Your RopeLogix logbook lives in your account, linked to your personal email address, and moves with you every time you change employer.

If you leave a company, your logbook stays intact. Your new employer can counter-sign fresh entries; your old entries remain exactly as they were, signed and sealed.

The 1,000-hour tracker

IRATA requires 1,000 hours of on-rope work (across specific techniques) before a Level 2 tech can attempt the Level 3 reassessment. RopeLogix tracks your running total automatically.

The progress bar on your dashboard shows your total signed hours and the percentage toward your next milestone. Hours only count once your supervisor has counter-signed the entry — unsigned hours appear in amber, signed hours in green.

Only hours that have been counter-signed by an IRATA Level 3 (or authorised Level 2 for specific entry types) count toward your official total. Log honestly — your L3 will review before signing.

What goes into each entry

Every logbook entry captures the fields that IRATA ICOP requires, plus a few extras that make life easier at audit time:

  • Work period dates — start and end of the period (the 14-day period rule is enforced; the app flags entries that span more than a fortnight).
  • Employer / organisation — the company you performed the work for. Stays associated with the entry even after you leave.
  • Location — site name and state. GPS can pre-fill the co-ordinates if you tap the location icon on-site.
  • Rope mileage (hours on rope) — actual hours spent on the rope, not total on-site time.
  • Technique checkboxes — ascending, descending, traverse, work positioning, and others per IRATA list.
  • Nature of work — free-text description of the job (inspection, NDT, painting, cleaning, rigging, etc.).
  • Supervisor name and IRATA number — auto-filled if the supervisor is on your org; otherwise enter manually.
  • Photo — attach a site photo directly from your camera roll. Stored with the entry, included in exports.
  • Voice note — tap the microphone to add a short audio memo. Useful when your hands are too dirty to type.
  • Gear chips — tag the equipment you used from your organisation's register. Builds a chain of custody without extra paperwork.

Counter-sign and validity

An IRATA logbook entry is only valid once it carries a supervisor's counter-signature. In RopeLogix, the supervisor signs digitally — either in-app or via an email link sent to their inbox.

Once signed, the entry is locked. Neither you nor your supervisor can alter the record — it is read-only from that point. If there's an error, raise it with your admin; a correction note can be attached but the original entry is preserved.

Exporting your logbook

Go to Logbook → Export to download a PDF that matches the layout IRATA assessors expect to see. The export includes all signed entries, technique summaries, total hours by category, and a signature audit trail.

Professional-tier organisations can also export as CSV for their own records management.

Why it beats paper

  • Can't be left at camp, rained on, or lost in a house move.
  • Running hour total always visible — no manual adding up.
  • Supervisor can sign from any device, any location, via email link.
  • Photos, voice notes, and GPS co-ordinates enrich the record.
  • One-click export when IRATA audit day arrives.
  • Survives employer changes — your record, your account, always.
