Getting your hours counter-signed

Two paths to a valid signature — whether your L3 is on-site or a thousand kilometres away.

Why the counter-sign matters

Under IRATA ICOP, logbook hours only count once an authorised supervisor has reviewed and signed the entry. An unsigned entry is a draft — it won't contribute to your IRATA hour total.

The supervisor's signature attests that the work described happened, the hours are accurate, and the techniques listed are correct. It's a professional declaration — not a rubber stamp. Your L3 is entitled to ask questions before signing.

Path 1: In-app, on the same device

Best when your supervisor is on-site with you.

  1. 1.Open your entry and tap Request signature.
  2. 2.The supervisor must already be the assigned signer on the request — if they're not yet assigned, add them via Request signature first before handing them the device.
  3. 3.Hand your device to your L3 supervisor. They review the entry details. If they're a RopeLogix user in your organisation, they tap Review and sign and draw their signature on the pad.
  4. 4.Once submitted, the entry locks and the signature timestamp is recorded against their account.

Path 2: Dispatching a signing request to an off-site L3

Best when your supervisor is on FIFO rotation, working a different site, or simply not nearby.

  1. 1.Open your entry and tap Request L3 signature. The drawer opens with three radios at the top: Inbox notify, Email link, Both. Pick one.
  2. 2.Each L3 in your organisation appears below as a card. The primary CTA on the card matches the channel you picked: Send signing request via Inbox, Send signing request via Email, or Send signing request via Inbox + Email.
  3. 3.Tap the CTA to dispatch. The L3 receives an in-app inbox notification, an email link, or both — depending on the channel.
  4. 4.They read the entry, draw their signature, and submit. No app login required for the email link — the link opens a review page in any browser. You get a notification that your hours are now signed.

Beneath the primary CTA on each L3 card sits a secondary disclosure: Sign now (in person) — hand them your device. That routes to the on-the-spot proxy flow described in Signing things — Context 4: hand them your device, they draw their signature there and then. Use it when the L3 is on-site with you and you don't want to wait for an inbox notification.

Email sign-off links are single-use and expire 30 days from when the request was sent. If your supervisor misses it, tap Resend link on the entry to send a fresh one.

If your IRATA assessor has specific requirements for logbook sign-off format, export a signed PDF from the entry as a backup record — see Reports and exports or Your IRATA logbook for the export path. Check the current IRATA ICOP or ask your assessor directly — requirements vary by assessor.

Who can sign?

Under standard IRATA ICOP rules, logbook counter-signatures must come from an IRATA Level 3 technician. Some entry types allow a Level 2 — check the ICOP guidelines for your situation if you're unsure.

RopeLogix records the supervisor's name and account details on every signed entry. If a supervisor enters incorrect information, the record will reflect that — accuracy is on them, and your logbook is timestamped with what was submitted.

After signing

Signed entries are locked immediately. The entry status changes to green ✓ on your logbook, and the hours are added to your running total.

If there's a genuine error in a signed entry, contact your admin. A correction note can be attached to the entry, but the original signed record is preserved — it cannot be deleted or altered.
